Dozens gathered in Vancouver Saturday for the inaugural “Mothers for Justice Memorial Walk.”
Many of those attending have lost loved ones, alleging the deaths were due to medical negligence. Now, they are channeling their grief into calls for justice and a campaign for change.

The Union of BC Municipalities has passed a motion to recommend to the province that our wrongful death laws be modernized so as to provide a foundation of “worth” under the law for everyone in the province of BC.
A foundation of “worth” or “value” of human life would allow for access to justice, accountability to wrongdoers, and for us to prevent future wrongful deaths in the first place through financial deterrence.

Vancouver cyclist Gary Kalmek suffered a broken leg, a broken arm and three broken ribs when he was hit by a car while riding his bike at Main Street and 15th Avenue in Vancouver in early June.
After undergoing multiple surgeries and spending a week in hospital, the 38-year-old library tech assumed he would be compensated for pain and suffering, but under the province’s new “no fault” model, which came into effect on May 1, most accident victims can no longer sue the offending driver and ICBC.
