UBCM Passes Motion to Recommend to the Province to Modernize its Wrongful Death Laws

The Union of BC Municipalities has passed a motion to recommend to the province that our wrongful death laws be modernized so as to provide a foundation of “worth” under the law for everyone in the province of BC.

A foundation of “worth” or “value” of human life would allow for access to justice, accountability to wrongdoers, and for us to prevent future wrongful deaths in the first place through financial deterrence.

Under new ICBC rules, each parent is entitled to $14,918 for the death of a child. Rules also state they will not be able to sue for more compensation.

“Heartbreaking,” Michael said. “It hurts that somebody can define her as having a number and that number ends up being roughly six times less than the value they would put in for a car.”
