The BC Wrongful Death Law Reform Society is seeking a Media Outreach Coordinator

‘In Their Name’ is the campaign of the ‘BC Wrongful Death Law Reform Society’. In response to the biggest human rights issue facing the province today, our goal is to modernize British Columbia’s antiquated wrongful death legislation, which predates confederation (1846). Under current legislation, the value of a human life is measured only by the deceased’s future lost income, so long as they had dependents.

As a result, access to justice has been denied to the families of the wrongfully killed who do not meet this discriminatory criteria. This has affected especially vulnerable groups, namely children, seniors, and the disabled, when they are killed by the careless or intentional acts of another.

BC is presently the last of all the provinces, including the Yukon, yet to have undertaken this critical legislative modernization to allow for dignity, value, and protections for all its citizens under the law.

When it’s ‘free’ to kill in BC, wrongdoers are not held accountable. This lack of general deterrence holds the province back in innovation of safety measures and protocols to prevent wrongful deaths in the first place.

Media History

The legislative reform our Society is seeking has been in the media at least since 1995. The stories are told by the surviving family members of someone who was wrongfully killed, only to discover that their loved one was worth nothing under the law in BC.

Where the Campaign is At Presently

We’ve engaged with 85 elected Members of the Legislative Assembly of BC, met with 19 of these MLAs as well as the Attorney General in person, presented at the NDP & Liberal Caucuses, and were introduced in Question Period at the Legislative Assembly, all in 2019.

So far in 2020, two of our videos went viral on Facebook, and have seen by over 65,000 British Columbians to date (as of May 7, 2020), which has resulted in over 1000 people using our website’s automated tool to contact their MLAs.

It’s time to pour some gasoline on this campaign and get it the media attention that it deserves!

Join Our Amazing Volunteer Team

The Campaign Coordinator, a UBC law student, works directly with bereaved families to be able to tell their stories, in publishing on our website, sharing on social media, and coordinating meetings with their local MLAs.

The President, a technology marketing entrepreneur, manages the strategy, technology, and marketing of the campaign. The President, who’s Father was neglected at a care facility, also serves as the Society’s representative speaking to MLAs, media, and the public.

The Vice President, Artist and Author of Heidi Dawn Klompas: Missed Opportunities – a published book distributed to all hospitals and MLAs in the province. She has worked on wrongful death law reform in BC since the passing of her daughter in 1997.

The Secretary, a Senior Lawyer with over 25 years of legal experience.

The Treasurer, a Senior Lawyer with over 30 years of legal experience and Past President of the Trial Lawyer’s Association of BC.

The Media Outreach Coordinator Duties

We are looking for candidate(s) to join our volunteer team, specifically to undertake the following:

#1 Leveraging Hubspot CRM to manage and engage with all existing reporters/journalists we have on file, and to discover and build relationships newly discovered media contacts.

#2 Liaising and updating reporters/journalists with where the campaign is presently at, and to ascertain further reporting/publishing opportunities.

#3 Coordinating meetings with bereaved families and their local media to tell their story with the wrongful death legislative reform perspective.

#4 Creating press releases of the Society’s activities to distribute and engage with all media.

#5 Outreach to radio, television, print, and web media to be able to have the President of the Society interviewed on wrongful death.

#6 Newsjacking – monitoring relevant events in the news and leveraging its relevancy to provide commentary from a wrongful death legislative reform perspective in BC.

Time Investment

As this is a part-time, unpaid volunteer position, and we are seeking a time investment of ideally 8 hours per week.

However, we will not limit your time investment if you are excited and passionate about obtaining results beyond the timeline and scope that we outline together.

#1 Either a student studying marketing, communications and/or public relations, OR someone in this career field looking to expand their portfolio of experience.

#2 Ambitious, hard working, with excellent communication skills who is excited about helping change the future of the province.

#3 Someone who feels passionate about making BC a safer and more dignified place for its citizens, in accordance with modern standards of human decency, which other Canadian provinces, as well as most first-world nations have already adopted.

#4 Someone who’s technologically proficient and is keen to learn new skills involving utilizing a Customer Relationship Management, specifically in this position Hubspot CRM.

#5 Someone who’s excited to work in a collaborative team environment with high quality, high performing people, to build lifelong connections, who will have your back, and act as solid career references.

#6 Results oriented – someone who’s excited by the opportunity of being able to say they for example; worked with 100+ journalists, coordinated 100+ media interviews, had 100+ stories featured in media, reached over 1,000,000+ British Columbians, which ultimately lead to BC’s legislation being modernized.
