MLA Garry Begg

Garry Begg, MLA for Surrey-Guildford, has met with the BC Wrongful Death Law Reform Society on June 11, 2019, as well as October 23rd, 2019, and was receptive to the Society’s call for legislative reform of our discriminatory wrongful death laws, which unlike every other province in Canada have yet to be modernized.

Under our current legislation, only those who had an income + dependants have worth under the law, leaving many, especially children, seniors, and the disabled worthless when they are killed by the neglectful, or wrongful actions of another. Please petition Garry Begg now for further feedback on public support for this issue»

The BC Wrongful Death Law Reform Society’s goal is to modernize the laws in BC, which unlike other provinces, currently denies justice to the surviving family members of children, seniors, and the disabled when killed by the careless or intentional acts of another.

What British Columbians Are Saying

Petition All 2020 BC Provincial Election Candidates Now

Unlike other Canadian provinces, BC has not made any significant amendments to its wrongful death legislation—ever. The current BC Family Compensation Act only values the lives of income-earners. This neglect must stop. Petitioning your local MLA, the Attorney General, and Premier with our automated tool can make a lasting difference to the lives of families who experience a wrongful death in British Columbia for generations to come.

Dear Candidate,

Unlike other provinces in Canada, in BC, only the families of deceased breadwinners see the inside of a courtroom in cases of wrongful death.

BC’s current Family Compensation Act only takes into account the direct financial losses resulting from death. Children, seniors and people with disabilities, who may not represent a financial loss that is immediately measurable, are classes of people whose lives are not valued or respected when they are killed in this province.

This is a human rights issue.

Investigations into the wrongful death of a child, an elderly person, or someone with a disability most often do not occur because there is no ‘loss of earnings’ to cover trial costs.

Many of your potential constituents are considered “worthless” under the discriminatory law in our province.

The BC Wrongful Death Law Reform Society has drafted legislation that can fix this problem now.

My vote is contingent on your commitment in this election to support a fair and adequate wrongful death law in BC.

What will you do to see that this human rights issue is addressed if you are elected?
